Heavy Metals Challenge Test:
Heavy metals come from different sources and we are all exposed to variable extents. Most of these metals have a cumulative effect and with the passage of time significant amounts may accumulate in various organs, especially liver, brain, bones, kidneys and endocrine glands.
The most common heavy metals found in our body include: Aluminium, Arsenic, Antimony, Beryllium, Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Bismuth, Nickel, Platinum, Thallium, Thorium, Tin, Tungsten and Uranium.
The Heavy Metal Challenge test is designed to estimate the levels of these metals in their storage sites. These storage sites are challenged using provocative protocols by an appropriate chelating agent(s). A sample of urine from a 24-hour urine collection is analyzed for heavy metal burden in the body.
The blood plasma levels of these metals are generally zero even when the storage sites are overloaded. Therefore it is important to evaluate their level after a challenge with specific chelating agents.
